OAKLEIGH FOREST SWIM TEAM VOLUNTEER POSITIONS
Referee--The controlling senior official at a meet. Referee may not be the Stroke and Turn Judge, but may be the Starter. He/She will insure all required officials are present and aware of their responsibilities. He/She will have a copy of USS swim rules and will insure that take-off judges are appointed at the start of the meet for relays. The Referee observes all situations affecting the meet and takes any actions required to keep the meet fair and efficient. The Referee receives all questions or protests from the League Reps, issues decisions, and advises those involved of further protest options if applicable.
Head Timer--Oversees watch check, specifies lane coverage, instructs timers and recorders on reporting order and procedure, and reminds timers to time any touch. Also coordinates with assistant backup coverage for missed starts, provides extra coverage, and observes for any problems/consistent deviations from norm of timers in a particular lane.
Timer--Reports times to the Recorder, helps the Recorder get the swimmer's name, alerts the Head Timer of any conditions making accurate timing difficult and calls the Head Timer for backup quickly if a start is missed.
Starter--notifies swimmers of the distance to be swum and the event, instructs swimmers to take their marks, and fires the gun to start each heat.
Clerk of Course--The head Clerk of Course is from the home team and works with a clerk of course from the visiting team to make sure that every swimmer is swimming in the appropriate heat and lane. The Clerk of Course also helps keep the meet flowing by keeping the benches full and helping swimmers go to their appropriate lane. Keeps track of all swimmers and the events in which they must swim, although the coach maintains the responsibility for "finding swimmers."
Stroke and Turn Judge--Keeps abreast of the swimmers during all strokes in a heat. Ensures that the rules relating to the stroke being swum are observed. The judge also ensures that when turning or finishing, the swimmer complies with the rules applicable to the stroke. The judge knows the USS rules for all strokes. Reports any violation at the end of the heat to the lane recorder along with the reason for the disqualification of the swimmer.
Recorder--Ensures that each swimmer has a time recorded on a lane slip for his/her event. Keeps track of each swimmer in the recorder's lane. Keeps up with each heat/event and notifies the referee if there are any problems.
Tabulator--checks the lane slips after each heat and puts them in order from fastest to slowest.
Scorer--Writes the name, time and place of finish for each swimmer. Distributes the points and calculates the score. At the end of each meet, must sign the score sheets along with the ESP League reps from each team.
Ribbon Writer--Writes the appropriate ribbons for their team.
Publicity--Completes the ESP league sheet with the names, times, and places of the top three swimmers in each event.
Heat Winner--Stays on the pool deck and gives a ribbon to the winner of each heat as they exit the pool.
Meet Setup--Friday night position that requires one hour of time starting at 8:30.
